An Albion man was fatally stabbed yesterday by a recently-freed convict and his brother-in-law is hospitalised after they were attacked by the man who was accused of slashing a tyre on their car at Williamsburg, Corentyne.
Dead is Surendra Nauth, 29, of Albion Front, Corentyne. Police said the incident occurred at around ten minutes after midnight yesterday. In a statement, the police said that Nauth and his brother-in-law Totaram Bhola, 25, also of Albion Front, were involved in an argument at Williamsburg with a man who had allegedly slashed a tyre of their vehicle.
“During the argument the man attacked them with a knife and stabbed Surendra Nauth to his abdomen and also inflicted a wound to the forehead of Totaram Bhola,” the statement said. It added that they were admitted to the New Amsterdam Hospital where Nauth later succumbed to his injury.
The suspect has not yet been arrested. The police said he was recently released from prison where he had served a sentence on a charge of wounding.
“He went to a wedding house with his wife around 7:30 Saturday night and I tell he ‘don’t go’ you know,” Surendra’s brother Robindra told Stabroek News yesterday. He said he had initially pleaded with his brother to stay home and drink with him and Bhola.
“He seh ‘no’ he gah go and he gon only drink two beers and come back so I tell he to be careful and call me if anything happen,” he said. Robindra recalled that at around 11pm on Saturday after he finished drinking with Bhola and checked his phone, he saw two missed calls from his brother.
“I call back and I didn’t get onto him so I wanted to know why he call cause I tell he call me if anything happen,” Robindra related. He said after he did not get onto Surendra, he decided to go to the wedding house with Bhola and another friend.
When he arrived at the wedding house, he said, he saw his brother dancing and went up to him and questioned him on why he had called. “He seh his phone was in his pocket so it probably dial by mistake,” Robindra said. He related that subsequently, his wife who was in the car waiting on him, came inside and related that a man had slashed one of their car tyres.
Robindra said when he went outside, he saw that one of the vehicle’s wheels was punctured and when he questioned his wife on who had done it, she pointed to a man who was standing near to the car.
“When we go out, me brother [Surendra] ask why he do it,” Robindra recalled. He said he was unaware that his brother had followed him outside to his car. “He ask the man like four times if he do it and he kept saying no and after like the fifth time, he start to get on bad and cuss up,” the man recalled.
Subsequently, after the man became rowdy, he bent down, pulled an object from the ground and slashed Bhola, who was standing next to the car, on his face. “After he slash he [Bhola], me brother run up to he and he look like he push he and then started to run away and I run behind he but I couldn’t get he,” Robindra added.
He said after he returned to the car, he made the horrific discovery. He had initially thought the man had pushed his brother but when he reached the car, he saw Surendra lying in the back seat, bleeding profusely with a gaping stab wound to his stomach.
Robindra related that they tried to rush the two men to the hospital as quickly as possible but were hindered by a punctured tyre and a street that was blocked.
“The whole street was block with cars all over and then all of a sudden, they just started throwing bottles all over and the whole wedding house break out in a fight,” Robindra said.
After they were finally able to get through the crowded street, they rushed to the two men to the hospital where they were admitted.
However, Surendra succumbed to his wounds sometime around 5am yesterday and Bhola remains hospitalised.
The man, who is a known convict, is still on the run. Police investigations are continuing.
