Diamond man accused of attempted murder

A man was on Friday remanded to prison on a charge of attempted murder, although his lawyer claimed that he had provided evidence to the police that he was elsewhere at the time.

Abdool Karim was remanded by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after being read a charge of discharging a loaded firearm with the intent to commit murder.

It is alleged that Karim, 46, of Lot 1730, Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara, discharged a loaded firearm at Alvin Mursalin, with intent to murder, on January 4 at Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara.Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers objected to bail, while noting that Mursalin identified the accused as the person who shot at him.

The court also heard that the two men have known each other for over seven years.

However, according to Karim’s lawyer, the accused was in Bartica doing construction work when the crime was committed. She added that her client has since presented to the police a list containing the names of the persons he was working with at the time. She noted too that he also took the ferry that day.

It was also highlighted that Karim’s wife was the one that made him aware that the police went to their residence to arrest him, at which point she informed them that he was in Bartica. Karim subsequently turned himself over to the police, whom he providing with a statement about his whereabouts.

Karim was nonetheless denied bail and the matter was adjourned until February 15.
