Lakeram Harry Narine was yesterday charged with the murder of his common-law wife Hafeeza Rohoman, whose badly decomposed body was found in a trench just over a week ago.
The court heard that Narine, 23, of Lot 56 Helena, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, murdered Rohoman at Helena, between January 7 and January 10. Narine was not required to plead to the charge.
According to the police prosecutor, Narine and Rohoman shared a common-law relationship for approximately three months and they usually had misunderstandings about her going back to the father of her children.
The prosecutor said the couple had another misunderstanding, which allegedly led to the defendant hitting Rohoman with a bicycle bar in the head, causing her to fall into a trench, where she succumbed by drowning.
The body of 28-year-old Rohoman was found floating in a trench some 10 minutes away from her home. She was last seen by her sister Shaneeza Rohoman, who had told Stabroek News that the woman was a victim of domestic abuse. Stabroek News was told that the woman, who had four children, had been living with the man for the last three months. Neighbours and family had stated that while both of them were alcoholics, the man would often beat her and prevent her from seeing her children, who would stay at her relatives.
Narine was remanded to prison by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul. His next court appearance will be on February 18th at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court.
