An elderly Canvas City woman was killed yesterday after she was struck down by a car while using a pedestrian crossing along the One Mile, Wismar, Linden Public Road. Henrietta Cadogan, 75, of Lot 572 Canvas City, Wismar, Linden, died while she was receiving medical attention at the Mackenzie Hospital.
Police, in a press release, stated that the driver of the car is currently in custody.
The accident reportedly occurred at 9.30 am, when Cadogan went to buy cassava
Eyewitnesses told the woman’s relatives that the elderly woman was hit by the speeding car as she was crossing the road. The car, they said, picked up Cadogan from the pedestrian crossing and sent her several feet into the air. She was pitched approximately 30 feet away from the point of impact.
First responders from the nearby Wismar Health Centre rushed to the scene, picked up the woman and administered first aid before transferring her to the Mackenzie Hospital.
At her home yesterday, family members were in shock. Cadogan was the mother of seven daughters. She had left the premises of her daughter’s Block 22, Wisroc home just minutes before the accident to go to purchase cassava from a shop.
Yvette Cadogan told Stabroek News that she received a message informing her that her mother was in a critical condition at the Mackenzie Hospital following an accident. The woman, who works at the Linden Hospital Complex, recalled that she went over to the sister hospital immediately and saw her mother being prepared for an x-ray. She noted that it was at that moment that her mother drew her last breath.
The dead woman, according to her daughter, was unconscious when she was taken to the hospital and remained in that condition until her death. She said her mother sustained a lot of internal injuries as she was bleeding through her ears. In addition, the back of her head was bashed in and she also bore signs of injuries along her abdomen.
Another one of the woman’s daughters, Donna Leacock, lamented that her mother lost her life for $100. The car that struck the woman was said to be a short drop hire car.
She also stated that after the driver struck down Cadogan, he did not offer any assistance and instead reportedly drove off. It was not until later that he returned and surrendered to the police. (David Papannah)
