Why is the list of electors for local government elections not on Gecom’s web site?

Dear Editor,

Local government elections are to be held on March 18, 2016. It is January 14 today. I could not find the list of electors for the various constituencies on Gecom’s website. This is very disturbing for an entity which has come under fire for what has been a lacklustre information campaign on the local government polls. Stabroek News’ What the People Say piece on the upcoming local government elections confirm the widespread lack of awareness of this important election. Could Gecom indicate why this critical information is missing from its website, particularly when the list of electors for the last general elections was available on its website before that election and still remains there? This information should be made available as soon as possible. It is fundamental to Gecom’s mandate to provide this information so voters could check the list online as well as in person, and for the necessary public scrutiny. In fact, it is a denial of vital electoral information to the public not to publish this list online.

Yours faithfully,

M Maxwell
