The Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) ‘Brazilian Invasion’ card set for February 20 will see Guyana’s national champion, Kwesi ‘Lightning Struck Assassin’ Jones facing American, Samuel Clarkson for the World Boxing Council light heavyweight FECARBOX championship
So said an official from the GBBC.
Jones, 31, is coming off a TKO stoppage defeat at the hands of Shawn Cox in 2013. Following the loss, Jones has been away from the ring but his record stands at 10 wins and three losses. Six of his wins are via the knockout route.
As for the 25-year-old Clarkson, he is 17-3 in professional boxing with 11 of his victories coming within the distance. The tattooed 6-foot 1-inch southpaw, who resides in Cedar Hill, Texas, is on a seven-fight win streak with only two bouts going to the judges’ score cards.
The ring-rusty Jones will have his hands filled to say the least.
The card will also likely include high profile fighters such as Elton ‘The Bully’ Dharry, Dexter ‘The Cobra’ Gonsalves, Mandessa Moses and Dexter ‘De Kid’ Marques. Exciting prospect, Imran ‘Magic’ Khan is also expected to make his second professional appearance.
An official of the GBBC said that the US-based Dharry, Moses, Gonsalves and Marques will match gloves with fighters from Brazil. Their respective opponents are still to be named.
Khan is schedule to lace it up against fellow Guyanese and exciting prospect, Quincy Gomes.
A knockout night of boxing is indeed on the cards.
The GBBC official also disclosed that should Dharry (19W-5L-1D) and Gonsalves (8W-1L-2D) defeat their opponents, the two will fight for the Commonwealth bantamweight and super lightweight titles respectively in May.
Plans are still in the pipeline and contracts are still to be signed but boxing starved fans are anticipating a solid night of fistic fury come February 20 at the Giftland Mall at Pattensen. (Emmerson Campbell)
