Passengers using the Lady Northcote ferry to and from the North West District are now benefitting from a reduced journey time following major repairs to the vessel.
Marclene Merchant, General Manager of the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that the Lady Northcote now provides a more efficient service.
“Before it was docked for repairs, a journey into the North West region lasted approximately 36 hours on the water. That has now been reduced by approximately four hours…similarly the turnaround time for the journey previously was nine days; it is now approximately five days,” Merchant told GINA.
In September, Lady Northcote was docked at the E.C. Vieira Dockyard in Houston, East Bank Demerara to undergo major rehabilitation. The company completed the job in late November to the tune of $140M, GINA noted.
Amongst the works done to the ferry were the repair of its hull; servicing of all on-board machinery and improvement of the interior and exterior decking.
