An elderly Sophia man was yesterday charged with beating his wife because she refused to take off her clothes in front of him.
It is alleged that Nicolas Roy, 70, of 184 South Section A, Sophia, unlawfully assaulted his wife on January 11 at their residence in Sophia.
Roy pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
According to the police’s case, Roy, who habitually beats his wife, went home and demanded that the woman, who was unwell, take her clothes off. When she refused the man’s request, he allegedly dealt her several slaps. A report was subsequently made to the police and Roy was arrested.
Roy was granted his release on $35,000 bail by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul, who also placed him on a bond to keep the peace. His next court appearance will be on February 1, when a probation report is expected to be given to the court.
