A man who attempted to traffic cocaine in two bottles of crème liqueur was on Thursday found guilty and sentenced to four years in jail.
Robin Llewellyn Wills, 45, of Duncan Street, Campbellville, 145 Guyhoc Park, North East La Penitence, and 625 Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, was found guilty at the end of his trial at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
Wills was charged with having 2.323 kilogrammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking in November, 2013.
According to the evidence led against him, Sonia La Rose, who was identified as a friend of Wills, had travelled to Guyana to attend a funeral.
During her stay, Wills was said to have accommodated her and had even helped her to renew her expired passport before she was scheduled to leave the country. In return for his kindness, La Rose had agreed to take a bottle of vodka for a friend of his.
On November 17, 2013, Wills and La Rose were on their way to the airport, when Wills stopped at one of his known addresses, Lot 625 Republic Park, East Bank Demerara. He unloaded the woman’s suitcase and inserted what appeared to be three bottles of crème liqueur, which he wrapped in her clothing.
According to the prosecution, La Rose’s sister had arrived in a taxi just in time to witness Wills’ actions. Leaving his car at Republic Park, Wills and the women continued to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
The court was told that before going through security checks, the woman suspected that something was amiss and requested help from an airline staff member with opening her suitcase.
During a perusal of the contents of the suitcase, the assisting staff observed that one of the bottles was not sealed and she became suspicious. As a result, the woman sought assistance from CANU ranks to conduct a proper search.
The search revealed a whitish substance, suspected to be cocaine. A test was conducted and the illicit substance was confirmed as such. In the presence of the CANU ranks, the woman gave a detailed statement vindicating herself.
