A man will be spending the next three weeks in jail after he admitted to assaulting his wife following a heated argument over how she was scolding their son.
Winel Bristol was jailed after he pleaded guilty to the charges when he appeared before city magistrate Faith McGusty on Thursday.
The court heard that he threatened and assaulted his common-law wife, Joanna Atkins, on January 18, at North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
According to the prosecutor, at about 9.10pm, Atkins was scolding their son when Bristol arrived home and an argument later ensued because he was angry at the manner in which she was handling the child. The court was told that Bristol then held Atkins by her throat, threw her to the ground and dealt her several slaps and cuffs to her face.
The accused, however, made an attempt to justify hitting Atkins by stating that the manner in which she scolds the child always angers him. It was, however, highlighted by the prosecutor that Bristol is in the habit of abusing Atkins. He also pointed out that the woman’s face was still swollen from the blows she received in the attack.
On the charge of threatening language, Bristol was fined $10,000, while for the assault charge he was sentenced to 21 days in prison.
