Police are currently trying to locate a Stewartville man who allegedly killed his common-law wife in a trench during the course of a domestic dispute on Thursday.
Dead is, 41-year old Bibi Zabeeda Zamaludeen, also known as ‘Teresa, of Seaview, Stewartville, West Coast Demerara. Her spouse, Rudolph Williams called “Hook” remains on the run.
Stabroek News was told that around 8.30 pm the couple, who seemed to be having problems, were spotted at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo. Williams was seen physically and verbally abusing the woman.
His actions prompted a truck driver, who was passing at the time, to shout at him to “stop beating the woman.”
At that stage, the man grabbed the woman by the neck and jumped into the trench. He reportedly proceeded to drag her to the other side of the trench in the bushy area, before lifting her out of the water and placing her in the pump station.
The driver tried to turn his vehicle around in order to use his lights to see what was happening to the woman but was unable to.
However, by then, a large crowd had gathered and some men tried to capture the man but they were unsuccessful. They then decided to search the trench for the woman and about an hour later they found her body in the station.
The dead woman’s mother, Zalika (only name given), explained to Stabroek News that she had learnt that her daughter and Williams had left their home at Stewartville at around midday on Thursday to visit his relatives at Zeelugt. It was during their visit at the man’s relatives that Williams reportedly started beating Zamaludeen, resulting in his relatives asking them to leave.
Zalika stated that she did not know her daughter was killed until yesterday afternoon, when the woman’s body was positively identified.
Zamaludeen and Williams were said to have been sharing a home at Sea View, Stewartville, West Coast Demerara for the past 13 years. And while they had no children together, Zamaludeen is survived by three children from a previous relationship: Saskia, 24, Annie, 19 and Suren, 18.
According to the dead woman’s daughters, Williams was always in the habit of abusing their mother, but she never made any attempts to leave him or make a report at the police station.
In a statement issued yesterday, police said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the woman.
