Over 1,000 students from schools in Region Nine (Upper Essequibo-Upper Takutu) received shoes yesterday under the ‘Rethink Initiative – Kind Soles Project.’ A Ministry of the Presidency statement said the project is being spearheaded by First Lady Sandra Granger and Guyana’s Consul General in Trinidad and Tobago Ernie Ross. It said the project, which targets 30,000 hinterland students, was initiated after Ross saw a photograph in a magazine depicting children in the hinterland areas going to school bare feet. The initial tranche of the donation was dubbed “the shoes that grow” since the footwear is expandable and is estimated to last each child about five years.
