Two in two for Team Evolution

Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams emerged winner of the third road race of the 2016 cycling season yesterday.

The Team Gillette Evolution (TGE) ace rider raced to victory in the Benjamin’s Sports Store 50-mile event in Berbice one day after his club mate, Michael Anthony took the spoils of the feature 35-lap event of the Ricks and Sari Programme in the National Park.

Williams brought his talents to the Ancient County and led Robin Persaud and his club mate, Orville Hinds onto the podium in perfect conditions for racing.

His other club mate, Raul Leal placed fourth while Shaquel Agard and Paul DeNobrega rounded out the top six paid positions.

“I didn’t just win it for me, I won it for my team. But I was really looking forward to the win today,” Williams said post race.

The Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) organized event, which rolled off at Fyrish, proceeded to No. 51 village and returned to the point of origin, initially saw Akeem Wilkinson (TGE) riding the first 35 miles in the lead all by himself.

About 10 miles for the turn back point, a group of approximately 16 riders, including the top six, then thwarted the tiring Wilkinson’s solo effort.

A series of attacks by several sets of riders ensued but they were all short-lived until Williams and Persaud changed gears about six miles from the finish.

The two wheelsmen rode in tandem to preserve their lead during the remainder of the trek and casually crossed the line almost wheel to wheel. They stopped the clock in a blistering one hour, 54 minutes and 29 seconds.

At the presentation ceremony, Director of Sport, Christopher Jones gave brief congratulatory remarks to the riders and FACC and also presented prizes. (Emmerson Campbell)
