A single mother of six was yesterday remanded to prison after appearing before a city court on a charge of trafficking almost a kilo of cannabis.
Marlene Sharples, 39, of La Parfaite Harmonie, was accused of having 925 grammes of cannabis in her possession on January 22, at Itaballi, Mazaruni.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Sharples received representation from attorney Latchmie Rahamat, who entered an application for bail on her behalf.
Rahamat stated that at the time the narcotics were found, police were conducting a search on a truck headed into the interior. She related that the cannabis was found in a box in the tray of the truck, where at least six people were located at the time, her client not included. Sharples, she said, told the police at the time that she had never seen the box before.
According to the prosecution, however, Sharples and nine other passengers who occupied the vehicle had been asked to hand over their belongings. He said that Sharples identified three cartons which were hers, one of which was later discovered to contain the 925 grammes of cannabis. He claimed that the woman had subsequently admitted to ownership of the narcotics.
Sharples was remanded to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman, who set the next hearing for February 4 at Court 1.
