Mon Repos resident Rohit Persaud yesterday found himself in court on a charge that he wounded another man, while his lawyer claimed that he was being wrongfully prosecuted.
It is alleged that Persaud, 23, of Lot 775 Block 8 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, on January 22, 2016, at Mon Repos, maliciously wounded Michael Lane. Persaud pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
According to the police prosecutor, Lane suffered several injuries to his head and other parts of his body.
However, Persaud’s lawyer told the court that his client was not involved in the beating nor was he even present at the time Lane was injured. Instead, he said there was a commotion where the incident occurred and when his client finally showed up, he assisted the police in clearing up the situation but ended up being charged with the offence. Persaud’s lawyer then told the court that since Lane did not suffer any life threatening injuries, his client should be released on reasonable bail.
After hearing the submissions, the magistrate released Persaud on $30,000 bail and set April 14 as his next court date.
