Police Constable Ganesh Rajcoomar appeared in court on Tuesday charged with raping a 14 year old girl last October and was later released on $200, 000 bail.
Reporters were barred from hearing the proceedings because it was an in-camera matter. The matter was heard by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Court One.
When Stabroek News attempted to get information on the case from both the clerk and the police prosecutor today they both said they were not permitted to give out any information on such matters.
The matter will be called again on February 24.
The policeman who is attached to an East Bank Demerara Police Station is being accused of committing the offence shortly after the teen went to him and reported that she had been abducted and had managed to escape.
After a police investigation was done, the matter was sent to the DPP’s Chambers for advice. The DPP last week recommended that he be charged with the rape of a child under 16 years of age.
