R&B singer, Quincy ‘Ego’ Lacon is going Chutney on February 6 at the National Chutney Competition slated for the parking lot of the Synthetic Track, Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
His song, “Proud Indian Woman” is about his great, great grandmother, who came to Guyana from India and settled in Corentyne, Berbice.
Ego’s grandmother was an indentured servant. “From what I was told she was a proud Indian woman who knew about her bagee [calaloo] and hassa curry. My grandmother was a woman who struggled living a poor life but was a proud Indian woman who was determined to make it in life,” Ego said.
He believes that, “As a singer you should be able to touch on all the genres.” So after receiving a call from his management, Ssignal Productions to record a Chutney song, Ego decided to give it a try. He recorded “Proud Indian Woman” and was chosen as a finalist.
The other finalists are reigning Chutney King Roger Hinds, Pooran Seeraj, Haresh Singh, Shelly G, Halima Khan, Colin Freeman, Sasnarine Hitnarine, Yogeta Kellawan, Savitree Lee, Bonita Seenarine, Chris Ken and Satish Udiram.
Ego said, “I’m prepared and confident. I don’t see anyone as a threat. I feel accomplished and privileged to be among other Chutney singers. I know I’m gonna place. This competition reflects our motto: ‘One People, One Nation, One Destiny.’ I’m looking forward to it.”
Ego said that fans should expect a spectacular performance as always. “Costume is gonna be on point. Fashion is gonna be on point. Appearance is gonna be on point. Expect a fiery performance as always!”
“Proud Indian Woman” is expected to be released soon on YouTube.
Meanwhile, Ego is also set for his acting debut in the film Ole Higue, which premieres on February 7 at the National Cultural Centre. Ole Higue was written by Bonny Alves. (JD)
