Residents of Bartica, like other parts of the country, are currently experiencing a water shortage owing to the dry weather. However, this has been compounded, they believe, by a mishap with the pump system. According to reports, the situation has been ongoing for a few days and will become much worse if water is not supplied by today.
Speaking to Stabroek News, resident Winston Miller said that while he is away from Bartica and has been for the past two days, he is aware of the present condition. This, he said, was raised with the relevant authorities a few days ago and based on that discussion, he believes the cause of the present situation is the possibility of an upgrade to the water system in preparation for township.
But another resident, Balram (only name given) said even if this were the case residents ought to have been informed and measures put in place for the facilitation of water.
Balram explained to this newspaper that the entire Bartica has been without water supply for the past three days. She said based on enquiries she was told that a part of the pump was damaged. Efforts by this newspaper to confirm this proved futile.
“If we don’t get water by today, is problems because right now me low on water supply. Is the little I got I using, and by tomorrow if I don’t get water I will have to go to the river,” she said.
Already, she said, a few residents who had no other option were utilising water from nearby ponds and the river to carry out their daily chores.
