Three men, including a driver and porter of a company who were supposedly victims of a ‘robbery’ committed on Thursday, are in police custody assisting with investigations after two of them confessed that the robbery was staged.
According to a police press release, “The driver and porter reported that they were travelling in their Canter truck when they were forced off the road by a motor car. Two men armed with firearms came out of the car and held them up and took away $1.2 million, a laptop computer and two cell phones.” The driver and porter told police that the men locked in the rear of the Canter vehicle and escaped. The incident allegedly took place at Harlem, West Coast Demerara.
However, police said, the two “victims” later admitted that they staged the robbery with the involvement of three other men who were given the money and cell phones after pretending to be carrying out the robbery.
A quantity of the stolen cash and the two cell phones were recovered following the arrest of one of the men while the laptop was retrieved in the vicinity of the staged robbery.
