Dear Editor,
As a concerned citizen, I would like to bring to the attention of the public as well as to the Ministries of Public Health and Tourism, concerns about the zika virus. I would like to know what preparations are being made to fight the spread of the virus in Guyana. Neighbouring countries like Brazil have deployed their military services to fumigate mosquitoes and reassure the public. The authorities there have been educating their population about the dangers of the virus and even discouraging women from getting pregnant. Our tourism sector could be affected if we do not address this concern. There needs to be a national plan put into motion. When the chikungunya epidemic occurred in Guyana recently our neighbourhoods and villages were sprayed. Thus we are pleading with the current administration to take similar action.
Yours faithfully,
