A 44-year-old Guyanese woman has been arrested in Ireland on suspicion of swallowing more than 1.7 kilogrammes of cocaine worth about €120,000.
Irish revenue officials stopped the woman as part of an “intelligence-led” operation involving the Irish police Garda Síochána, the Irish Mirror newspaper reported on Friday.
Head of Guyana’s Customs Anti -Narcotics Unit (CANU) James Singh told Stabroek News that CANU is aware of the seizure and the woman is being held in Ireland.
It is believed the drugs would have a street value in Ireland of almost €120,000, the Irish Mirror reported.
The woman left Guyana for Dublin last week but made several in-transit stops.
The Irish newspaper reported that according to a Revenue spokesperson, the woman is being questioned at Ballymun Garda station under section two of that country’s Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, as investigations continue.
