Den Amstel were crowned the West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) sanctioned 2nd Annual Derick Josiah Memorial Knockout Champs, downing Pouderoyen 7-6 on penalty kicks in the grand finale on Sunday at the Den Amstel Community ground.
With the score locked at 1-1 following the end of normal and extra time, penalty kicks were required to decide the outcome. Asked to open the shoot-out, Pouderoyen made no mistake as they converted from the distance.
The home side quickly levelled the matchup as they netted in their first attempt. The score then became 2-2 as both teams scored in the second round of the shoot-out. The third round of kicks witnessed the score balloon to 3-3 as both units converted once more. Pouderoyen then suffered a setback in the fourth round as they missed from the distance. Afforded a chance to seize control of the match, the home side failed to grasp the opportunity as they missed from the mark.
Sudden death kicks were then required to settle the outcome as both teams scored in the fifth round to push the score to 4-4. The first round of sudden death kicks saw the score becoming 5-5 as both sides netted.
The second round of sudden death kicks also failed to separate the sides as they both scored to push the score to 6-6.
Nonetheless, Pouderoyen suffered their second letdown of the contest as they missed in the third sudden death round. This time, Den Amstel capitalised on their foe’s failure, netting in their third kick to seal the championship.
Prior to the conclusion, Kwesi Alleyne gave Pouderoyen the lead compliments of a flying header from within the box after making contact with a Troy Allicock cross.
However, the hosts levelled proceedings in the 45th minute under similar circumstances as Kevaughn Warde directed his header unchallenged into the back of the net, after racing onto a Travis Hilliman cross within the box.
With the win, Den Amstel collected the championship trophy while Pouderoyen walked away with the runners-up accolade. In the third place encounter, Eagles defeated Uitvlugt Warriors via walkover to collect the respective accolade.
