A security guard was yesterday fined $75,000 by a city court after admitting to a wounding charge.
Timothy Waldron, 27, of South Ruimveldt Gardens, was read a charge stating that on January 28, at Mandela Avenue, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Keon Yhap.
Waldron pleaded guilty to the charge.
The defendant told the court that there had been an accident involving one of his company’s salesmen, causing him to go to the scene. He stated that he and a colleague attempted to speak to both drivers but the complainant, Yhap continuously spewed indecent language at them.
He stated that a traffic officer was spotted and informed of the situation, but when the rank informed Yhap of his intention to arrest him, the man resisted his attempts. Waldron said that during the scuffle, the officer’s firearm became exposed and so when the complainant threatened to take hold of the gun, he intervened by taking his weapon and lashing him across the head.
According to the medical presented in court, Yhap suffered lacerations to the left of his forehead.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ordered that Waldron pay a fine of $75,000 to the court, or alternatively, spend six months in prison.
