Stanleytown fisherman Richard Bourne was on Thursday cleared of an armed robbery charge by a city court.
It had been alleged that Bourne, 43, on November 9th, last year, being armed with a knife, robbed Roopnarine Sawh of a silver chain, valued $35,000, a gold and silver hand band, valued $35,000, and $45,000 cash.
After trial, however, Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan found that there were several inconsistencies between the testimonies of the victim and that of the investigating rank, Constable Clarke.
She added that she had not found the victim to be a credible witness and as a result the court was not satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that Bourne was guilty of the crime.
At Bourne’s arraignment, the prosecution had claimed that he had placed a knife to Sawh’s body as he was about to enter his car and robbed him of his possessions. It had been further alleged that an alarm was raised and the accused was later apprehended by public-spirited persons and plainclothes police.
