The Pepsi Hornets and the Yamaha Caribs recorded contrasting victories when the GRFU/GTT 15s league continued this past weekend at the National Park.
In the third game of the season on Saturday, the Hornets stung the up and coming Police Falcons with an 84-nil drubbing, while the Caribs outlasted the UG Wolves 31-25 yesterday in an enthralling encounter.
The Hornets’ experience coupled with their saran-wrap defense and potent offense put paid to the efforts of the Falcons outfit which fielded five new players.
Leading the Hornets’ demolition was winger, Blaise Bailey who used his speed down the line to score four tries. Captain Elwin Chase and Rickford Cummings breached the Falcons’ try-line on three occasions apiece while Mark Bollers also put his name on the score sheet with two tries.
Jose Felicien and Peabo Hamilton also recorded a try each. Leon Greaves and Cummings then chipped in with five and two conversions respectively to complete Hornets’ thrashing of the police recruits.
Chase was high in praise for the Falcon’s effort, but stated that his team is out to make a statement on all teams involved in the tournament as the Hornets team intends to take the top honors of the league.
Meanwhile, the Caribs pulled off somewhat of an upset with their close win over the rampant student athletes.
O’Neil Charles two quick tries surprised the Wolves who were on the back foot from the start of the game. The Wolves brushed off the opening onslaught and regrouped with tries from Godfrey Broomes, Trevon Selman (two), Osei McKenzie and Robert Skeete but their efforts were not enough to put away the Caribs who earned their first win of the league.
Tries by Captain Akeem Fraser, Jomokie Davis, Andrew Jarvis and three conversions by vocal leader, Theo Henry earned the Caribs the victory and wiped the bitter taste of last week’s 38-20 loss to the Hornets off their mouths.
