Police yesterday afternoon arrested a man during which they discovered a firearm and ammunition, just minutes after he allegedly carried out an armed robbery on a driver and passenger of a Route 42 minibus.
The incident occurred around 12:55 hrs.
According to a police press release, minibus driver, Ameer Karim, 51, of Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and passenger Trevor Blackett, 41, of Mocha, EBD, were attacked and robbed at Providence, EBD by a man who had joined the bus at Middle Road, La Penitence.
The vehicle was on its way to Grove, EBD, “when the perpetrator requested the driver to stop and held up the victims at gunpoint as he exited the vehicle,” the release said.
The man grabbed $8,500 in cash and escaped on a bicycle that was parked in the vicinity along the roadway.
He was later apprehended by the police at the Eccles traffic lights and when a search was conducted on his person, an unlicensed .32 pistol with 3 rounds was discovered. The stolen cash was also recovered.
He is currently in police custody and is expected to be charged shortly.
