Cleveland Thomas, Linton Mentis, Natrena Hooper and Avon Samuels were some of the standout performers when the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) held its second development meet of the season Sunday at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
Thomas started the day’s activities by running away with the male 5000m event in a time of 16m and 31 seconds with his Running Brave club mate, Winston Missingher placing second.
Mentis then heated up the track with a blazing 100m run. The Police Sports Club standout clocked an impressive 10.5s in the victory.
In the triple jump event, Hooper recorded a leap of 12.53m to win the event ahead of her younger sister Natricia Hooper of Running Brave who produced a leap of 11.69m. Linden’s Chantoba Bright finished third in the event with a jump of 11.55m.
Natrena Hooper was also dominant on the track as she recorded the fastest women’s 100 metres time of the day after stopping the clock in 12.3s to better her Guyana Defence Force (GDF) club mate, Aniqah Powley who finished the event in 12.6s.
She also ran the second fastest 200m of the day clocking 25.4s to finish behind Running Brave’s Avon Samuels who clocked a speedy 25.0s.
Samuels also won the women’s 400 metres in 57.0s to finish ahead of Natricia Hooper who ran 58.6s.
Devon ‘Scooby’ Barrington, Andrea Foster and Eion Rodney were also in sublime form.
Barrington had a blistering 800m run which he won in 1m.:58.6s while Matthew McKenzie had the best 1500m with a time of 4m:20.2s.
Foster, a World Championships representative for Guyana last year, ran a cool 800m in a time of 2m:24.8s while Claudrice McKoy breezed to an easy 1500m win in a time of 5m:06.0s.
Rodney ran the fastest 400m of the day, clocking 49.7s to top Kareem Purch who clocked 50.2s. Winston Dummett finished third in a time of 50.7s.
Activities on the AAG’s calendar will continue on February 14 with another track and field development meet at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora.
