A match-winning performance by Gajanand Singh inspired The Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) to a 10-wicket win over the University of Guyana (UG) last weekend in the first division Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) two-day competition played at the Malteenoes Club.
Singh, who seems to be making a comeback to senior cricket after nearly five years,
missed out on a century falling for 95 and bagged 5-38 as GNIC dominated their opponents.
UG bowlers, left-arm spinner Damien Vantull (4-66) and Ray Newton (3-27) helped restrict GNIC to 249 despite Singh and Anthony D’Andrade (53) scoring half centuries in the first innings replying to UG’s 176.
Off-Spinner Gajanan Sooknanan bagged 7-46 in UG’s first innings but contributions from Darnel Douglas (55) and Devon George (54) helped UG to a respectable total.
After being restricted to 89-9 batting a second time thanks to Singh’s 5 wicket haul, GNIC needed just eight runs for the win and duly reached that target.
Over at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Ground, Kevin Ramdeen’s first innings 153 proved to be the back-breaker for the Police Sports Club (PSC) in their match against the hosts. Batting first GDF scored an imposing 350-5 after the Berbician’s huge century while former national youth batsman Seon Hetmyer chipped in with a solid knock of 67.
PSC then racked up a first innings score of 171 with Sherwin McPherson scoring 62, Michael Corbin (28), Kenton Grumble (26) and Kevin Leitch (20), the primary scorers. Seamer Jeremiah Harris led the way with 3-10 while Ishwar Singh (2-21) and Orlando Tanner (2-17), lent support.
After enforcing the follow on, with a lead of 179 on the board,
Off-spinner Randy Lindore spun webs around the Police batsmen as he snatched up 7-59 which was enough to topple Leitch’s 84-ball 100 as they were shot down for 202. Batting again, GDF finished on 24-1 to win by nine wickets. The action continues this weekend.
