The general manager of a mining company, who allegedly threatened to kill his reputed wife, was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Courts.
Dwayne De Leon was read a charge which stated that on February 4, at Lamaha Park, George-town, he used threatening language to Yolanda Persaud. According to the facts presented to the court, De Leon told Persaud, his common-law wife, that he would slit her throat.
Subsequent to De Leon’s not-guilty plea, the court heard from his reputed wife that yesterday morning he went to her home, although instructed by officers to stay away from the premises, and threatened to “finish” her. She also stated that the accused, threw her cellphone—which she said contained proof of his abuse—into the wall. It was also alleged that sometime last year, he had pushed her into their wardrobe and locked her in it.
The accused stated that he had told Persaud, with whom he has a three-year-old child, that he was no longer interested in being with her. He claimed that she then told him that she’s a woman and her mouth will get him.
Attorney Mark Conway, who represented the accused, made a request for bail, informing the court that his client, who resides at Lot 302 Lamaha Park, should be released on his own recognisance given the fact that he was just released on $10,000 station bail and that he is innocent of the allegations being made.
However, Magistrate Moore denied bail on the grounds that there may have been a possible act of witness tampering; the fact that the accused threatened Persaud the very morning of the court hearing and the fact that he is a flight risk given his job.
The case was adjourned to February 17.
