A Mon Repos man was fined $15,000 on Wednesday after he was found guilty of verbally abusing his wife for not cooking his food.
It is alleged that Ramnarine Akaia, 47, of Lot 97 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, made use of abusive language to Sabitta Lakhraj on February 9 at his residence. Akaia pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court which is temporarily being held at the Better Hope Community Centre.
Police Prosecutor Shevon Jupiter told the court that on the day in question, Akaia went home drunk and requested food from Lakhraj, who is his wife. However, she told Akaia she had not cooked because she was over at the neighbour’s. On hearing this, Akaia released a series of abusive words on his wife, the prosecutor added.
Akaia later told the court that he was sorry.
Magistrate Ally-Seepaul fined Akaia $15,000 and placed him on a one-year bond to keep the peace.
