Vendor in court over assault on boy, 16, after alleged robbery attempt

A man who allegedly assaulted a 16-year-old boy who he claimed attempted to rob him was on Wednesday released on his own recognizance when he appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at a city court.

Robert Mc Almon, 33, a vendor, was charged with unlawful wounding of the minor, who sustained a lash to his head with a bottle on February 6, at Cornhill Street.

Mc Almon pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The defendant’s legal representative told the court that her client, on the day in question, sustained injuries to his lip and had to receive 18 – 19 stitches, after the minor, along with others, tried to rob him. It was further stated that the minor was subsequently chased by onlookers and if he had suffered any injuries it would have been from those chasing him. The court heard that the accused allegedly lost $63,000 during what was said to be an attempted robbery.

It was also brought to the court’s attention that the minor currently has a matter in another court in relation to the same offence.

No objection to bail was made and the defendant was released on his own reconnaissance. The case was adjourned to February 26 for report.
