There were seven road fatalities recorded for January, according to the Guyana Police Force, which says speeding caused more than half of the accidents.
According to statistics released by the Guyana Police Force on Thursday, the seven fatalities were recorded from seven accidents, in comparison to five fatalities from five accidents for the same period in 2015.
Four of the victims were pedestrians, while the other three comprised a pedal cyclist, a driver and a pillion rider. Speeding, the police noted, has been the major contributory factor to fatal accidents, having been the cause of four of the seven fatal accidents. Up to the end of Thursday, a total of seven more persons had died from five fatal accidents for this month. Meanwhile, the police reported that traffic enforcement has resulted in a total of 6,012 cases for this year being made against errant motorists at the end of January, with 2,566 cases being for speeding, 304 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 84 for using cell phone while driving and 199 for failing to wear seat belt. It added that the Traffic Department has intensified its enforcement activities, with special focus on speeding and driving under the influence, in addition to other offences such as driving motorcycles without safety helmets and using cell phones while driving.
