Defending champs West Side Ballers, Shattaville Gunners, Showstoppers, Harmony Ballers and Agricola Upsetters clinched opening night wins when the second Guinness of the Streets West Demerara event commenced Thursday.
Played at the Pouderoyen Tarmac, West Side Ballers downed Crane Raiders 3-0 with Denny Morgan, Dwayne St. Kitts and Quessey Alleyne scoring in the sixth, 14th and 15th minutes respectively.
Losing finalist of the inaugural event Pouderoyen Showstoppers defeated Best Road Ballers 1-0. Marvin Josiah was the difference on the night as he found the back of the net in the 18th minute.
Similarly, Harmony Ballers displayed their early championship credentials dismantling Champion Boys 4-0. Shaquille McBean netted a brace in the seventh and 13th minutes while Kevin Richards and Hermon Munroe scored in the ninth and 12th minute each.
Also, Agricola Upsetters overcame newcomer Comfort Ballers 1-0. Jermin Jefford separated the two teams with a ninth minute conversion. On the other hand, Shattaville Gunners edged Samaroo Dam 1-0 through a 11th minute Stephon Griffith attempt.
In the other results, Harmony Ballers-B defeated DeKinderen United 1-0 on penalty kicks after normal time ended 0-0 while Bagotstown Warriors downed Water Street Agricola 3-2 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended scoreless.
Brothers United defeated last year’s third place finisher Patentia Street Ballers 2-0 on penalty kicks after normal time ended 0-0. Action in the event is slated to continue on Tuesday with another round of group matches at the Vergenoegen Rice Mill Tarmac.
Following the conclusion of the group ground, the quarterfinal stage will kick off on Thursday at the aforesaid venue.
