The third weekend of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph/Guyana Rugby Football Union 15s league will scrum off today at the National Park from 16:00hrs.
In the fifth game of the season, the Pepsi Hornets will tackle the UG Wolves.
The league continues tomorrow at the same venue pitting the Yamaha Caribs against the Police Falcons.
The four teams competing in the tournament are UG Wolves, Police Falcons, Yamaha Caribs and the Pepsi Hornets. Notably absent is the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) outfit which would not be competing in the tournament due to several reasons.
Last weekend, the Hornets stung the up-and-coming Police Falcons with an 84-nil drubbing while Caribs outlasted UG Wolves 31-25 in an enthralling encounter.
The Hornets’ experience, coupled with their saran-wrap defence and potent offence, put paid to the efforts of the Falcons outfit which fielded five new players.
Leading the Hornets’ demolition was winger Blaise Bailey, who used his speed down the line to score four tries. Captain Elwin Chase and Rickford Cummings breached the Falcons’ try-line on three occasions each while Mark Bollers also put his name on the score sheet with two tries.
Jose Felicien and Peabo Hamilton also recorded a try each. Leon Greaves and Cummings then chipped in with five and two conversions respectively to complete Hornets’ thrashing of the police recruits.
The Caribs pulled off somewhat of an upset with their close win over the rampant student athletes.
O’Neil Charles’ two quick tries surprised the Wolves who were on the back foot from the start of the game. The Wolves brushed off the opening onslaught and regrouped with tries from Godfrey Broomes, Trevon Selman (two), Osei McKenzie and Robert Skeete but their efforts were not enough to put away the Caribs who earned their first win of the league.
The Hornets and the Caribs will be looking to continue their winning ways this weekend
