GUYANA’S Lady Jags footballers are confident of securing a much needed win when they confront Guatemala in the opening game of today’s Group ‘B’ double-header of the CONCACAF final round Olympic Qualifiers being staged at the BBVA Stadium in Houston, Texas.
The Lady Jags and their Central American counterparts both lost their opening games last Thursday
and another defeat today will end all hopes of Rio 2016. The Guatemalans surrendered a one goal lead to lose to Trinidad and Tobago by the odd goal in three while the Guyanese lost 5-0 to Canada making today’s match a crucial one.
After a physical rest day on Friday the Jags had an on field training session yesterday morning and in a pre-game interview with Head Coach, Mark Rodrigues it was revealed that the girls are ready for the Guatemalans, “Yesterday (Friday) was fantastic as they went through the hurt, pain and disappointment of the opening loss. The turning point was when we sat down and watched the game and told them of all the things they did well and highlighted it in the video. And together with some positive motivational remarks the switch was turned on and by last night (Friday) they were ready to battle. This morning (Saturday) at our training session you can see and feel they are willing and ready. They want to play. Tonight (Saturday) we will watch the Guatemalans against Trinidad and they would see the relevance of this morning sessions
where we worked on the weaknesses and strengths of Guatemala. The sessions went good this morning and I can say
the girls are willing, eager and ready”.
The Coach stated that today’s game will also see some changes to the starting lineup but was tight lipped in giving any details as to the adjustments.
“Unfortunately I cannot give that information and that’s the surprise. That’s the beauty about this encounter. There’s much tactics involved but our emphasis remains the same of defense first then attack”, Rodrigues declared.
Guyana’s offense was non-existent against Canada in a game where the ball was in Guyana’s half for almost the entire game but today there will be a different game plan and according to the Coach ‘it will be horses for the course’.
The game is set for 14:30 hours Guyana time which is two hours ahead of Houston’s time
