A fire suspected to be electrical in origin completely destroyed a Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara (ECD) house, leaving a woman counting some $2 million in losses.
The Lot 4 Chateau Margot, Railway Embankment, one-bedroom house went up in flames around 9.30 am yesterday and according to Basmattie Vevacanand, who owned the house, nothing was saved. Vevacanand was the sole occupant of the house.
She said she had just finished helping her son pack his bags, since he was about to depart for Berbice, and they were outside awaiting the arrival of a minibus when she saw smoke emanating from a room located at the back of the house.
The visually traumatized woman said while it was still unclear what caused the fire, the house had been subjected to frequent electricity short-outs.
The entire house was completely destroyed in a matter of minutes, she said, adding that by the time the Guyana Fire Service arrived it was too late.
While arrangements will be made to have the house reconstructed, Vevacanand said, she will be seeking shelter at her sister’s home, located in Success, ECD.
