Minibus and taxi drivers at the Moleson Creek Ferry Terminal have formed the Moleson Creek Bus and Taxi Drivers Association.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Public Telecommunication and Tourism, the association’s first office-bearers are Michael Torrington, Devendra Approo, Rudolph Deoraj and Nawin Lakhram: Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. Committee members are John Boodie, George Davis, Armit Lakhram and Daniel Inniss. Director General of Tourism Donald Sinclair supervised the elections at a meeting on February 13.
The release said the drivers “expressed relief that they are now properly organized and able to make orderly representations to visitors to Guyana from or through Suriname, to the Police Force and other authorities on matters” that affect them.
The ministry said the new association is part of an initiative to upgrade operations at all ports of entry in Guyana.
The ministry reports appreciable progress especially in the Corentyne area, including not only physical, but also systemic enhancements. Welcome banners have been installed in both the departure and arrival sections of the terminal and the drivers have adopted as their uniform monogrammed t-shirts bearing the new logo “Guyana – South America Undiscovered”, with which they were presented with last December, it added.
The Ministry of Public Telecommunication and Tourism and the Guyana Tourism Authority congratulated the association and committed to continuing to train both the drivers and administrative staff in good customer service and basic communication techniques including Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese.
