A 60-year-old man was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on charges of injuring his 10-month-old grandson and his daughter-in-law with a cutlass.
The court heard that on Saturday, February 13 at 70 Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara, Geewan Sanichar unlawfully and maliciously wounded the baby, Omar Jones with intent to murder.
Sanichar, a security guard, was also charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding the baby’s mother, Maria Jones, 18.
Police prosecutor, Sergeant Sherwin Matthews told the court that the baby is still hospitalised and that his condition is said to be serious.
He submitted that if granted bail there is a likelihood that the defendant would not return for trial.
The prosecutor also asked for the matter to be transferred to the Wales court where he is scheduled to make his next appearance on February 26.
Sanichar told the court, when asked, that he was previously charged and spent 16 months in prison. He also told the magistrate that Jones and his grandson resided at his home.
Stabroek News learnt that around 8 pm, the man allegedly fired the chops with a cutlass during a domestic dispute.
The mother was at the time cradling the baby who sustained a single chop wound to his head. The baby was admitted to the hospital. Jones who was chopped to the right hand was treated and sent away.
