A woman was chopped yesterday morning during an attack by fellow villagers, whom she says have threatened to kill her.
The woman, Bhagwandai Harkishun, 50, of Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, is currently nursing chop wounds sustained to her head and above her right eye.
Harkishun told Stabroek News that the attack occurred as she was going to work at Campbellville, where a nearby resident and two daughters, who were armed with kitchen utensils and a piece of wood, assaulted her.
The injured woman explained that after she was put off at her workplace by a taxi, she saw the trio approaching her. The woman was at the time trying to cross the road but before she could have done so the woman and her teenage daughters attacked her.
Harkishun said the mother was armed with a rolling pin, while one of the girls was armed with a chopper and the other was armed with the piece of wood.
The mother and daughters reportedly beat the woman, resulting in her sustaining gaping wounds to her head.
Harkishun said the guard at her workplace went to her rescue. He later took her to the Kitty Police Station, from where she was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
She stated that subsequent to receiving medical attention, she returned to station and gave the police a detailed statement.
Harkishun said she has had problems with the residents for some time and although reports have been made to the police, they have not acted on them.
The injured woman recounted that last Friday one of the women and a few men threatened and verbally abused her. She said during the confrontation the woman threatened to kill her and her family members and to burn her house.
She said she made a report at the Kitty station and the officer in charge told her to return Monday, when she would accompany her to make an arrest. On Monday, she said, the officer had a meeting and referred the matter to a Sergeant, who further referred the matter to Sparendaam Police Station. As a result, the complaint was not investigated.
The woman said she is pleading with the police to work vigorously to bring an end to her torment.
