Dear Editor,
Kudos to President Granger for sticking to his guns on the issue of banning vehicles older than 8 years from coming into the country as well as used tyres. Auto dealers will just have to get over it and Guyanese will adjust.
Editor, it is regrettable that under the previous administration, Mr Jadgeo was hailed as a champion of the earth and touted the LCDS, but yet continued to allow high polluting vehicles, considered unacceptable in developed countries into our backyard, and also encouraged the dangerous use of used tires which no doubt contributed to many accidents.
As a citizen and an ex-pat I was flabbergasted as to why our cities and towns continue to bombarded by the really noxious fumes from these vehicles, but our leaders would be bare-faced enough to brag about the modernity of Guyana to foreign dignitaries.
I for one welcome the ban, and only hope that in a matter of years we can move to electric cars as the technology becomes more mainstream and affordable, along with better roads and maybe a beautiful highway to Lethem and elsewhere in Guyana.
Guyanese should be proud that they have a President who looks out for their interest and well-being instead of the bottom line. Whether this continues is yet to be seen, but my glass is up on this decision from our leaders.
