KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC-Michael Frew, a member of the new ICC Under-19 World Champions West Indies, says team work was the main reason for the side’s historic success.
West Indies defeated favourites India by five wickets in the finals to blemish their unbeaten record in the tournament.
“It was definitely, team performance,” said Frew, the outgoing Jamaica Under-19 captain.
“It wasn’t one person who really carried the team. Everyone chipped in at the right time”.
West Indies won the match with three balls to spare, scoring 146 for five after bowling out India for 145.
Keacy Carty, led the chase with a patient 52, after fast bowlers Alzzarri Joseph and Ryan John destroyed the Indians with three for 39 and three for 38, respectively.
“Our opening bowlers, again, gave us a good start with the new ball and the bowlers in the middle came and finished the job,” said Frew in an interview with The Gleaner.
“In the batting we knew we had a lot of balls and the guys batted patiently”.
It was the first time West Indies lifted the title after placing second in 2004 when Denesh Ramdin’s side lost to Pakistan in the finals.
The Caribbean side has been on a winning streak after rebounding from a warm-up series defeat against Bangladesh and losing their opening match to England.
“Leading up to the final we were winning matches so our confidence was at a pretty good level,” expressed Frew.
“However, we knew that India was a good team and didn’t take anything for granted.”
