Dear Editor,
There seems to be a misconception among some people as to how the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre, popularly known as the ‘Red House’ derived its name.
Research showed that it was referred to as ‘Red House’ because of the colour of the protective coating of shingles. As such it had nothing to do with the ‘communist’ ideological inclination of the late Dr Jagan as is mistakenly believed by some people.
Actually, Dr Jagan inherited the building with the existing colour after he was elected Premier following his party’s victory in the 1961 elections. He lived there from 1961 to 1964.
The building was home to several senior colonial officials which included the former Colonial Speaker of the House, Sir Eustace Woolford.
Yours faithfully,
Hydar Ally
