Repairs to the damaged Diamond Housing Scheme Well Station have commenced and are expected to last up to three weeks, Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) confirmed yesterday.
Due to the rupture of the well casing, the pump station had starting spurting clay and residents in the Diamond and Kaneville communities have been unable to access water as a result.
Stabroek News had reported yesterday that GWI had signed a contract with Nabi Construction Incorporated to repair the damage to the well. GWI yesterday confirmed that the contract, worth over $12M, was awarded to Nabi Construction Incorporated, which it said began works on Thursday.
“The rehabilitation of the well station will involve the identification and sealing of the rupture in the well casing, installation of mechanical retrievable packer, airlifting and disinfection of the well,” GWI Project Manager Orin Browne was quoted as saying in a GWI statement on the repairs.
“We estimate that all works should be completed within two to three weeks,” he also said, while noting that the duration of the rehabilitation depends on the severity of the damage on the well casing.
As a result of the disruption, GWI has been trying to supply water to the two communities using tanker trucks. While GWI continues to provide water via tankers, Browne was quoted as saying that the company understands the difficulty customers are experiencing. He added that the company’s technical staff along with the contractor would be working to ensure that the problem is resolved in the shortest time possible.
