The Region Four School Choir emerged victorious yesterday when the Ministry of Education-hosted chorale competition ‘Salute to Guyana’ concluded at the National Cultural Centre.
Pitting their vocals against 10 other choirs from the other nine administrative regions and Georgetown District, the winning group sang “Song of the Republic” and a medley of folk songs.
Coming in at second position was Region Ten with “Guyana the Free” and “Kuma Kuma Fish.” Georgetown District took third place with a rendition of “Salute to Guyana” and “Little Brown Boy,” while Region Three’s original composition “We Nah Giving” and “Hymn for Guyana’s Children” secured fourth place.
The competition involved a combined choir presentation, where students from primary and secondary schools in their region or district came together to form a choir. Each choir was required to perform a national song and a song of its own choice.
Today the Children’s Costume parade and road march is scheduled to start from 10 am at the Parade Ground. The parade route will be east into Middle Street and north into Camp; east into Lamaha Street, then north into Albert Street and into the National Park, according to an Allied Arts Department official.
Students are asked to assemble at the parade ground for 9:30 am for a prompt start. The ministry has asked for road users who have vehicles to avoid using the designated route for the parade.
