Defending champs West Side Ballers booted

A new champion of the second annual Guinness of the Streets West Demerara championships will be crowned after defending champions West Side Ballers were booted from event Thursday losing to Brothers United 0-1 on penalty kicks.

With both teams unable to score during the normal and extra time intervals at the Pouderoyen tarmac, penalty kicks was required to settle the quarterfinal showdown.

Asked to take first strike from the distance, Brothers United made no mistake as they converted from the mark.

West Side Ballers then surrendered the lead as they failed from the mark in their first attempt.

The score remained unchanged in the second round as both sides failed from the distance. Needing only a conversion in the third round to seal the victory, Brothers United handed the holders a lifeline as they missed from the distance. Nonetheless, West Side Ballers sealed their own exit from the event as they too failed to score in their third and final attempt. With the win, Brothers United will now lock horns with Showstoppers in the semifinal round today at the same venue, after the latter defeated Harmony Ballers-B by a 2-1 margin.

Keifer Adams gave Harmony Ballers the initial lead in the 12th minute, placing his effort into the roof of the net after latching onto rebound from a previous strike.

However, Showstoppers levelled the outcome two minutes later compliments of an Anthony Harding first time strike from the right side, after collecting left side pass.

With the score remaining unchanged at the end of the second stanza, extra time was required to fashion a winner.

Showstoppers eventually prevailed in the contest in the 33rd minute through a Marvin Josiah first time finish into the back of the net, after collecting a right sided cross on the left side of the field.

Meanwhile, Shattaville Gunners defeated Bagotstown Warriors 2-0 to seal their berth in the next round. Jeuel Stephen and Jalen Williams scored in the 12th and 17th minutes respectively.

Due to the victory, the Gunners will now oppose Harmony Ballers following the latter’s 1-0 win over Agricola Upsetters.
