Residents of Matthews Ridge, Region 1 are expected to soon see an energy boost as government yesterday invited bids for a high-powered generator for use at the community’s Power and Light company.
The Hinterland Electrification Company Inc. (HECI), which falls under the purview of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, in an advertisement says it is receiving bids for the supply of a 175KVA/140KW prime power, diesel generator. The generator will have to be delivered at Matthews Ridge Power and Light Inc.
According to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI), the HECI has its genesis in the Project Execution Unit (PEU) of the Office of then Prime Minister Samuel Hinds.
The PEU was established in 2004 to manage the implementation of the Government of Guyana (GoG)/Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) sponsored Unserved Areas Electrification Programme (UAEP).
The main objectives of the UEAP were to expand existing coastal electricity grids to unserved areas within a feasible distance from the grids, and to examine ways in which hinterland areas could be provided with electricity in the most cost effective and sustainable manner. It implemented several demonstration electricity projects in hinterland communities to test their viability for possible replication in other communities.
