Mere hours after stepping off the plane, Elton ‘The Bully’ Dharry headed straight to the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis gym yesterday.
Determined to continue his ascension in the world bantamweight ranks, the New York based prized fighter returned to his old stomping ground focused on landing his winning punches.
Under the watchful eye of legendary trainer, Lennox Blackmore, Dharry opened his training camp for a potential career altering fight against former IBF Super flyweight champion, Felix Machado of Venezuela.
‘The Bully’ is scheduled to face Machado (26W-13L-1D) in a 10-round contest on Saturday in the headline bout of the ‘Hostile Territory’ card at the Giftland Mall.
Dharry (19W-5L-1D) who is on a 16-fight win streak, revealed that a victory is of ‘utmost importance’ and he is hungry to add another ‘W’ to his record come fight night. A loss could perhaps be a major setback.
“My opponent is very experienced, he is an ex-world champion so I expect him to be crafty and I expect this to be a tough fight” said the 30-year old.
Dharry has never lost a fight as a pro on local soil and plans on keeping it that way. Confidence is one of the keys to victory.
“Confidence is built in preparation that is why when I hit the gym and workout I give it my all. The fans can expect what they always expect from Elton Dharry, I come here to win, I’m always in a good fight, I give 100% of myself, I fight hard and I put on a show.”
While Dharry stopped short of predicting a knockout, Blackmore had this to say: “Come early, this guy can hit, it won’t last long. He is in tremendous condition and come Saturday night, you guys will see what I mean.”
High profile fighters: Mandessa Moses, Dexter ‘De Kid’ Marques and Barbadian, Miguel ‘Hands of Stone’ Antoine will also be showcased on the card.
Exciting prospect, Imran ‘Magic’ Khan is also expected to make his second professional appearance in the ring where Giftland and the GBBC will try to recreate a Las Vegas-like atmosphere for boxing fans.
Moses will face debutant Ansilla Norville (four rounds), Marques (flyweight) takes on Machado’s countryman, Freddie Belano in a 10-round affair while Antoine faces Revlon Lake in a welterweight matchup. The Lake/Antoine bout is billed for eight rounds.
Khan is scheduled to lace it up against fellow Guyanese and lightweight prospect, Quincy Gomes. A six-round rematch involving welterweights, Kishawn ‘Riddick’ Simon and Cassius ‘Classy’ Matthews is also on the cards.
There will be three amateur fights before the six-fight professional segment.
Olympic hopefuls, Dennis Thomas and Desmond Amsterdam will clash in the exhibition contest, followed by Clairmonte Gibson against Dillon Charles in a bantamweight fight.
Nandkumar Singh and Jason Phillips will headline the amateur segment in a junior welterweight bout.
“We are hoping that this will be an explosive card” said President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool recently.
A knockout night of boxing is indeed on the cards.
Abdool disclosed last week that should Dharry and Marques (14W-2L) defeat Machado and Belano, the two fighters will challenge for the British Commonwealth bantamweight and flyweight titles here on May 21.
Admission for the event is $5000 for ringside and $2000 for regular seating.
