Man-of-the-match Roston Chase bagged a career-best 10-104 but the Barbados Pride were unable to bowl out defending Professional Cricket League Regional four-day champs Guyana Jaguars who ended on 252-7 in their second innings, as round seven ended in a draw yesterday at the Kensington Oval, Barbados.

The Jaguars had successfully hunted down a second innings target of 335 back in 2014 at the same venue against the Pride but yesterday were unable to chase down a victory target of 405 despite starting the day with all their second innings wicket intact.

Scores in the match Barbados Pride 274 and 320-4 declared (Shai Hope 114 not out, Jonathan carter 100 not out; Guyana Jaguars 190 and 252-7.

The Jags resumed yesterday on 52-0 but ran into problems in the form of their tormentor-in-chief Chase who was used as a part-time spinner.

The 23-year-old, who is the fourth leading run-scorer (496 runs) this season, was lethal with the ball during the second innings, nearly winning the match for his team as he ended with 5-77.

Opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul batted for 288 minutes for his gritty top-score of 69 (8×4 1×6), sharing a third-wicket stand of 67 with Guyana Captain Leon Johnson who scored an even 50 from 92 balls with three fours and three sixes, his 26th First-Class half century at this level.

West Indies Test opener Rajendra Chandrika scored 49 but no other significant contribution could be extracted from the Jaguars strong batting line.

Credit must be given to Barbadian Raymon Reifer, who scored an unbeaten 19 off 116 balls with two fours and one six and West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo who was seven not out from 61 balls, seeing their team to safety as stumps on the final day arrived.

Chandrika was stylish yesterday morning before he was undone by Chase, one run short of what would have been a well-deserved half-century. The off-spinner struck again, shortly after this time finding the edge of Assad Fudadin’s bat (02) for Johnathan Carter to snap up the offering at second slip.

Chanderpaul’s 50 came from 124 balls with one boundary and Guyana went to lunch at 130-2 with Johnson on 25 off 38 balls with two sixes and as many fours while Chanderpaul was on 53.

When play resumed, the introduction of Antigua-born leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr., (1-50) proved to be a smart move by Pride skipper Kraigg Brathwaite as he was rewarded with the wicket of Johnson,

who had just got to 50 but then flicked a full-toss which caught brilliantly by Hope at mid-wicket, leaving the Jags 163-3.

Chase then began systematically picking off the Guyana batters; Chanderpaul playing a careless swipe, only to pick out Kevin Stoute at mid-on and his dismissal was followed by that of the tournament’s leading run-getter Vishaul Singh who was caught at slip by Johnathan Carter for 15.

Guyana went into tea 197-5 needing 208 more runs to from the final session but Chase got his fifth wicket of the innings when wicket-keeper Anthony Bramble (19) was caught at leg-slip by Carter, leaving the Jags 218-6.

Walsh Jr., then took an amazing running catch off Stoute to dismiss Veerasammy Permaul for 16 and Brathwaite brought himself on and almost got the wicket of Bishoo who was dropped by Chase at second slip when on six.

Guyana, who entered the match on 101 points, secured six points, three for bowling and three for the draw.

They now have 107 points while the Pride who were 82 points, received a total of eight points to take their overall tally to 90. The Jaguars will now turn their attention to the Windwards Volcanoes who they play in round eight, beginning this Friday in St Lucia.
