A six-member Guyana junior delegation returned to local shores with an 11 medal haul following participation at the recent St Vincent & The Grenadines Junior Squash Open championships.
The tournament, staged February 19-21, is a World Squash Federation (WSF) Junior Circuit Event which means that the (WSF) will use the results to help them arrive at their rankings.
The Guyana team, which comprised Taylor Fernandes, Larissa Wiltshire, Makeda Harding, Daniel Islam and Shomari Wiltshire, finished with three gold, five silver and three bronze medals.
Securing gold medals were Fernandes, who defeated Larissa Wiltshire in the girls Under 19 final 3-1, Harding, who played unbeaten to win the girls U15 round robin event and Shomari Wiltshire, who defeated Alex Stewart of Barbados 3-0 in the Boys U-13 final.
Larissa Wiltshire won two silver medals, losing in the girls’ U19 final to Fernandes and also in the mixed doubles final, Harding, who lost to Vincentian Thandi Myers 3-0 in the Girls U17 final and Shomari Wiltshire who went down to local Kai Bentick 1-3 and 0-3 in the boys’ U15 and U17 finals.
Fernandes secured a bronze medal in the U19 mixed doubles division while Daniel Islam was third in the boys U15 and U19 divisions.
The team’s manager was David Fernandes, coach, Garfield Wiltshire and chaperone Juanita Fernandes.
In an invited comment coach Garfield Wiltshire said that the tournament showed some of the players where they were in terms of their standard of play and what they will need to work on in an effort to get better.
