Santos FC and Western Tigers maintained their unbeaten streaks in the GFA/Stag Beer League defeating Northern Rangers and Flamingo respectively on Monday.
Played at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda, Santos squeaked past the Kitty-based unit 1-0.
The fixture started brightly for the youthful Santos unit as Ryan Hackett found the back of the net after only two minutes.
Hackett almost doubled his side’s lead in the 37th minute, unleashing a powerful, left footed strike from the top of the box which crashed into the upright.
The momentum of the fixture changed in the second period as Northern Rangers began to throw bodies forward in search of the equaliser.
Sherwin Grimes missed a glorious chance to level the fixture in the 47th minute. Racing to the centre of the box following a through pass from right side strike, Grimes fired his effort wide of the left corner after being on a one-on-one situation.
Grimes spurned another a great opportunity to equalise the affair in the 52nd minute, directing his unchallenged header over the crossbar, after collecting a perfectly placed Nigel Denny cross from the right side.
Meanwhile, Western Tigers made light work of Flamingo FC 3-0. Randolph Wagner led the West Ruimveldt giants with a hat-trick in the 45th, 75th and 90th minutes.
The championship will continue tomorrow at the same venue with a doubleheader.
In the opening fixture at 18:00hrs, Guyana Police Force (GPF) will oppose Riddim Squad while Sunburst Camptown will faceoff with Beacons FC in the feature contest at 20:30hrs.
